14. Second millennium

Joana Vasconcelos, Trafaria Praia, 2013

The beginning of the 21st century is characterized by the exacerbation of artists personal identity, which makes it virtually impossible to uncover common lines of action. The strongest trait that can be identified is the importance of the conceptual component in the pieces. It’s not the radical conceptualism of the sixties, where the materialization of the pieces was dismissed, but rather the valorization of a strongly conceptual punchline that ends up being a defining one and, at the same time, guarantees the artist's engagement in the milieu of his time.

These times observed an equalization of the media, the artists complete freedom to choose and the respect for their idiosyncrasies, both to their ideas and to the production of the pieces. Video now cohabitates with painting; the installations don’t fight the sculptures for the main role, and the drawings transmute in all possible forms.

It is also in this time that the art of social intervention returns, stronger, and that they gain visibility, often with strong controversy. The projects were based on a political agenda that brought to light fundamental issues such as decolonization and sexual diversity.
